Dust has always been the thorn in the digital Photographers side so has anyone got any experience with the new built in dust removal systems? and just how good are they?
Also with more camera manufacturers now incorporating it into their models how important a feature is it? or is it just a bonus if fitted?
I have the Olympus E-500 with the 'SuperSonic Wave Filter'. I've had the camera over a year now and have not yet noticed any dust appearing in any of my shots.
It's activated every time you turn the camera on, which slows startup by a fraction of a second. Some people complain about that (what are they shooting that requires them to have a camera that starts up 0.5 seconds faster?), and some, perhaps justifiably, suggest that this should be done when the camera is turned off, rather than have the fresh dust sit there. But whatever - it seems to work well.
I think Olympus recommends sending the camera back once every 1-2 years (depending on problems) to have it cleaned and the "sticky tape" that traps the dust replaced.
