My desktop computer is connected to a router by cable and is as slow as ditch water, very frequently not loading the page at all, just hanging, whereas, my laptop, which is wireless connected is always fast. Anyone got any clues about how I can improve the performance of the desktop?

First thoughts

clear all caches and temp files
clear the recycle bin

Has it just gone slow or has it gotten slower over time?

could be a dodgy port, cable or the cable could be suffering interference from other cables around it

could always try plugging a wireless connector in the desktop and seeing if that speeded things up

Thanks gents, the computer is clean, I do that regularly, I did speed checks and those appear normal, as far as I know thre are no other cables around, the cable skirts the fireplace. I think the problem has been around since I got  the computer, I just didn't realise it till Leah began working on my laptop regularly.  It's a little better if I plug in directly to the cable modem, but still not up to the speed of the laptop, it doesn't hang, just delayed. I have just been clicking through my ringo pics and it delays up to 30 seconds before changing pictures every few pictures, so a little run than a delay.

I have a wireless card in the studio desktop, I'll give that a try and see what happens.

Thanks again.
