To produce a rather stunning make over effect with blonde subjects I use two programs, Paint Shop ProX and Photoshop Elements or CS2.

The first step in producing the smooth porcelain effect is the smoothing process for the skin, which I covered on this thread and for which I use PSPX. http://mikesphotography.myfreeforum.org/about1152.html

Whether you use the clarify tool (mentioned in that thread) or not is down to the picture. Everything is by eye, so it's about whatever works for you. I have nothing to add to the picture of Caitlyn, used here, in terms of light, as far as I can see Mike has taken a pretty much perfect shot so I shall leave the light well alone. Once the Digital Camera Noise removal is done, any last blemishes can be taken out using the Blemish remover tool. The first image is my smoothed starting image.

The next stage is done in four stages. Firstly converting the image to B&W, for this we want a good contrast and not too light a skin tone.

Everything from this point on is done either in Elements or CS2 though you may have done the B&W conversion using Channel mixer in Elements/CS2. I've used PSP and used a yellow filter for my conversion.

With the B&W image open in Elements/CS2, paste the smoothed colour copy as a new layer. If you are pasting the colour image in and it's showing as B&W, make sure you are in RGB Mode and not Greyscale (Image > Mode > RGB Color). Change the blend mode of the colour layer in the Layers Palette to 'Lighten'. Click on the B&W layer in the Layers palette and go to Filter > Distort > Diffuse Glow. For this shot of Caitlyn I used the following settings for the Diffuse Glow - Graininess - 0, Glow Amount - 2, Clear Amount - 16. For adults my normal settings are Graininess - 0, Glow Amount - 3, Clear Amount - 15. Click 'ok', and you should now be looking at something like this.

Select the colour layer in the Layers Palette and choose, (Elements) Enhance > Adjust Lighting > Brightness and Contrast, (CS2) Image > Adjustments > Brightness/Contrast.  There's quite a difference between Elements and CS2 here so adjust according to taste, in Elements I upped both the Brightness and Contrast +13, in CS3 it needed +18 for both.

Next duplicate this layer and set the blend Mode to Hue. And that is it.

No such problem for Mike, if he could sell that picture of Caitlyn to Ikea he could put his feet up and retire, from what I've seen it's in perfect keeping with the kind of pictures they sell.  Very Happy
