using photoshop, my masking seems to have gone wrong.

Previously painting with black revealed the under layer, and with white it was undone. Now the white does not work! Spent a number of hours trying to revolve, but ..........

I must have forgotten something extremely simple or else the program has gone wrong,!!!!!
