Hi there pasvorto and welcome to the forum,

I've not used the D40 but the reviews it gets arn't bad, not sure but I think the kit lens is the same as was on the D70 - D70s but some of the Nikon user maybe able to say for certain, but for a kit lens it's not a bad performer. (I'll check it tomorrow for sure)

I've got some reviews at home I'll post up tomorrow when get back from work.

Mike

I've read plenty of reviews. Just curious about first hand knowledge from anyone in the group. No need to post another review.

I currently have a Canon Rebel Ti. By next fall I will either get a Nikon D40 or a Canon Rebel XT (350D). I have a couple lenses for the canon, but not enopugh invested to prevent me from selling them and walking away.

Well I've still got my 350D if you want any feedback on that and I know theres a few more 350D owners on here.

Nikon have a cash back offer on at the moment for the D40 and D40X not sure if it extends to the USA. I put a link up some where on the site think it's in News and Discussion.

The 350D IMO is a very capable performer, build quality is good but with it's small size and light weight it didn't feel right so I brought the battery grip which gave it a more substantial size and a weight that meant you actually think you have something in your hands.

The kit lens like most of Canon kits lens isn't much cop but if you put some good glass on the front, it takes a very respectable picture (just have a look at some of the 350D owners shots on the forum for proof).

The controls are easy to sort, all the main things ISO etc are easily accessible from the menu. The buttons are a touch on the small side but thats a matter of taste and your hand size.

The noise at high ISO is not a big issue and is controlled very well.

I've still got mine as a backup for my 5D but one area the size of the 350D works for you is Street photography it's not in your face or other peoples if you know what I mean.

Not sure what else I can say, if you have anything specific just ask away.

Mike

I have small hands. I read about the rebel Ti being "too small". It fits me just right.

Possibly depends on the price difference and what you want, the extra cash could go to some better glass.

So it would be a case of putting them side by side and checking the specs and seeing if the difference is worth any extra money.

Everywhere I look, the D70 is more expensive than the D40. In fact, I am finding a "body only" (used) for $599. I can get a new D40 (with lens) for $525.
