160 quid is not bad for that size..
but i dont see how you would ever use that amount of space..
i guess if you went on holiday for a week you would only need one memory card, but i would be worried that if it broke you would lose everything...
i think a handful of 1 & 2gb cards is a much safer way to go...

thing is, that limit is constantly changing too - I remember when people thought you were mad to use 512mb cards

If you use a Canon 1DS II and shoot in RAW & JPEG simulaniously at 16MP, I'm sure it won't take long to fill it up!

still stand by the fact that its better not to put all your eggs in one basket!

Got to agree with Adam. having had disks mess up on me.

I'm not saying put all your eggs in 1 basket, I'm just saying that sometimes people forget that the eggs get bigger, so the baskets need to keep up

Fair play, though a thousand pictures on a card is too many for my liking. Gets me wondering how far they are going to push picture size. My D80 taking pictures at 3872 x 2592 and printing at 72 dpi is capable of 53 x 36 inches. I am never ever going to go that big, but it does mean I can crop to quite small areas and still have a decent print size.

I can fit 250-280-ish pics on a 2gb card shooting in hsc mode/raw (6.9mp) I brought home 393 from sunday's racing, and shot 440-odd in total. I don't think I have enough capacity for raw+jpg with 2x2gb cards
If I'd have been shooting on 512mb cards, as was the general consensus no more than 2 years ago, I'd have probably gone insane, not to mention any additional issues with the amount of rain I was shooting in for most of the day
It's all a very relative thing - I can understand not wanting to go away on holiday and having all your pics on one card, but there's a certain level of day-to-day practicality with the more capacious cards. I have every faith in my Sandisk Extreme IIIs but I reckon it'll be prudent to change them every 18 months or so considering the insane number of shots I anticipate getting through this season.

I take your point. If I was shooting in RAW my 2Gb card would take 163, and that is quite low in my book. On Fine JPEG it's 264 and that's a comfortable number for me. I carry two cards, one in, one spare. 500 pictures in one day is extremely unlikely for me and even filling a card would be a rare event, but I like the leeway of having a spare just in case and for weekends away.

Just to add. I am also incredibly impressed with the Sandisk Extreme III x133 SD cards. Absolutely brilliant!

i know what you are saying Jon...cant argue...
interesting that you say you think you should change them every 18 months though..never really considered that...
do you think that that could be a serious issue down the line? or would it just be for your peace of mind?

peace of mind really - it's not something i've practiced, but if my racing photography carries on in the way it's going atm, losing half a day's photos could result in major financial loss
