Thanks Jon - the colour on the background is on off white tent enclosure, it was something I looked at again after posting the image, and am going to see if I can get it white.
I used a tip in Scott Slebys book about boosting colour - he uses lab mode for one step after he has made his other adjustments - seems to lift everything - its interesting to see it working - just choose a channel in lab mode and the difference can be seen.

Thanks John - I know what I did
I was so engrossed at the time on boosting colours that my eyes did not see what was happening - it was only in the cold light of day - and Jons comments - that made me see what I had done.
Moral - when finished editing an image wait a while and look at it again later - do not post too soon.
