Not local for most of you, but there are a few of us who can make the trip, and you never know who might be traveling... or you can wait until 2008 when the exhibit comes to Scotland.
George Eastman House International Museum of Photography and Film will present the largest Ansel Adams exhibition in its six-decade history, featuring many photographs Adams gave personally to the museum. Inspired by the 100th anniversary of the birth of Ansel Adams (1902-1984), George Eastman House revisited its extensive collection of Adams’s work and created an exhibition of 150 photographs that reflects his full career. Ansel Adams: Celebration of Genius opened in Spain and has been touring the United States, breaking attendance records at each venue. Prior to its final destination in 2008 in Scotland, the exhibition is coming home to George Eastman House this spring and summer, May 12 through Sept. 3.

I went to the Ansel Adams exhibition yesterday.
Well worth the trip. It closes here on Monday after a nearly four month visit. I am so glad I didn't miss the opportunity. Even mid-week, after all this time, it was moderately crowded.
I'm glad I did this at this stage in my photography. Only with all of the things I've been learning in the last six months could I really begin to appreciate his genious. I was so moved by his vision and technique on some images that I bought a book of his photography while I was there so that I can more closely study three or four images which inspire me.
Another thing I learned is how much he manipulated images in the darkroom. Sort of like using CS3 in the dark with gloves on, lol. He did an enormous amount of dodging and burning as well as many other techniques. Short of replacing the sky or cloning out undesirable items, he did the same things we do (I don't think that with his extremely careful and thoughtful composition that there would ever be "undesirable" items in one of his images though!).
Although the exhibition is leaving Rochester, it will still be visting many areas in the US and UK over the next two years. There are different exhibitions (i.e. Ansel Adams: Celebration of Genius from the George Eastman Collection and Ansel Adams from the Anee Adams Helms' Museum Set).

another photographer who was very good in manipulation was Angus McBean, welshman and an eccentric, some of his poses look like they came from photoshop - he had the models place their head in holes in props etc
