Black & WhiteBlack & White
For colour photography bad weather is a nightmare, as pictures taken in such conditions tend to look flat and boring. But black & white is different.
If you remove colour from the equation it doesn’t matter how grim the weather is, you can still produce incredibly evocative pictures. These days colour images can be converted to black & white and look just as strong. So, if you return from a day’s shoot and feel your colour shots lack something, either scan or download them onto your computer, convert them to black & white and then use Photoshop’s controls such as Channel Mixer, Levels and Curves to boost contrast and add drama.
If you prefer to shoot b&w film and handprint the negs, use contrast-controlling filters to boost the tones – a red or orange is ideal – and print hard to grade III or IV to really bring out those brooding tones.
