I tried it with my Sigma 2.8 and got nothing other than a very dark surround on the shot. | ||

You need a faster lens Keith - 1.8 or better, this was taken with the Nikon 50mm 1.8 - I tried the 2.8 first and result was same as yours, then I read the technique again and spotted the need for fast lens.
