Thanks for your comments. I must say that No.2 pleases me more for the same reasons John gave. It made me remember something that they taught us in art school, negative spaces. When drawing, say, a chair, if you get the spaces right the object will be right, and so often when taking pictures the shot is let down not by the object but by the background or the setting. I am aware that framing the shot is important, but as an exersize I am going to try to change how I take pictures. In seeing something I want to take a shot of, I wonder, if I ignore that and scan the rest of the frame can I work towards more dynamic pictures?

second shot works for me, petals seem to be more in focus and framing for me is better - background is wonderful on it, discreet/not distracting but there

Thanks Jon, interesting comment. I took it with my new Macro lens and am still working it out. That shot was on f6.3 1/1000, at that distance I could probably have taken it at a lower f stop and reduced the amount of noise. I can still do that digitally, but I probably need to do some series shooting to work out what DoF works at different distances.

My ego not withstanding, It's beginning to register what a point and snap merchant I am. This is the same shot with some noise reduction.
And here's one taken on f2.8 with pretty much the same problem, and then some reduction added, which all says to me, I don't know what I am doing yet. Old dog, new tricks, comes to mind.
