Extension tubes help.I have just bought a set of 3 AF extension tubes for my D80. My intention was to get greater magnification on moon shots. I can now get seriously close macro shots, but nothing other than a complete blur at any distance. Have I misunderstood totally what Extension tubes do?
Clove and needle no cropping, taken at a distance of 0.5cm, full image size 3872 x 2592. Awp!

i have looked at these too..
i was under the impression that they would work for "normal" photography as well as macro...
so i am surprised you are struggling..
they do seriously effect the DOF tho..so is it possible you are struggling with that?

Hi Adam, I wish DoF was even the beginnings of a problem, I am talking total blur, not even close to focus. This is a long shot down my garden at infinity.

oh! yet you can get amazing macro shots like the first one..
doesn't make sense does it..
so i dont have a clue! obviously, but out of interest..did it look like that through the view finder?! and was that auto focus or manual?!!?!?!?
so that first shot. was that a macro lens with an extension tube, or normal lens? cant belive you can fill a frame with the head of a needle!!
imagine what you could do to a spiders face or something like that....

Hi Keith, I thought the same until I actually bought one and tried it...
But I´m quite sure that for magnification of "normal"-sized subjects like landscape we better have bought a teleconverter . It doubles the focal distance of the lens (100-300 mm will become 200-600mm). At least that´s the explanation that I´ve got after I phoned my camera store ...
BUT I´m absolutely sure that you´ll love the extension tube... It makes the world of tiny little things extremely interesting, you´ll get a whole new view on things

macro tubes, like close up lenses (filters to some) can't be used for long distance works
Moon shots need - bloody long lens, teleconvertor at least = more expense - sorry

Thanks so much everyone. Oh, the pain of it, a tele-converter on my wish list. And you're right flowergirl, I already do love them for close work. Spiders face Adam? I'm not sure my heart would take it.
Any advice on the best tele-converter to get much appreciated. I have a Tamron 70 - 300 tele - macro lens.

been having a browse through my back catalogues and trying to find the thing on teleconverters, all I can come up with is this, and I quote.
"Teleconverters, also known as extenders, these accessories fit between the lens and camera body to increase the focal length of your lens by 1.4x, 1.5x, 2x and even 3x. Various types are available - check the number of elements it has, the more the better, for a 1.4x you want at least four elements, for a 2x at least seven. There are restrictions with using them - you'll lose one to two stops of light and with some lenses, you'll need to manually focus."
DSLR Photography.
I'll have a dig later when I get a chance Unc and see what I can come up with, I know I have something somewhere.
