ony complaint is that jetty is colliding with the hills - stepladders aren't usually what one would pack to go shooting but would have made a diff here
my comments all seem a bit negative atm, sorry, it's not intentional

Jon - no worries, what you feel is a jetty is actually the railings at the edge of the prom, the water is in fact the kids paddling pool.
I tried all sorts of variations on a theme for height, lying on the ground at the edge of the pool, waist and chest height, but opted for this one (not quite eye level - as high as the tripod would extend.) - the others all lost something in the viewfinder. Didn't have any steps with me, and I had left Teresa in the car ....

i do like the borders around your photos? how do you do them? i'm no photoshop expert so if its anything to do with that i'll be lost.

Derek, thanks
they are relatively easy, the floating frame is essentially a dropped shadow effect using layer styles in photoshop. The one I am using also uses the bevel and emboss. If you get into photoshop, creating an action automates the work making life so much easier.
You can create custom styles using one or more of the following effects:
Drop Shadow Adds a shadow that falls behind the contents on the layer.
Inner Shadow Adds a shadow that falls just inside the edges of the layer’s content, giving the layer a recessed appearance.
Outer Glow and Inner Glow Add glows that emanate from the outside or inside edges of the layer’s content.
Bevel and Emboss Add various combinations of highlights and shadows to a layer.
Satin Applies interior shading that creates a satiny finish.
Color, Gradient, and Pattern Overlay Fills the layer’s content with a color, gradient, or pattern.
Stroke Outlines the object on the current layer using color, a gradient, or a pattern. It is particularly useful on hard-edged shapes such as type.

and here, http://www.phong.com/tutorials/dropshadow/
there are loads of other places, and when I get a moment I will add a brief tutorial, I think there is one on another way to do frames somewhere else on here
Found it at http://mikesphotography.myfreeforum.org/about2356.html
and Keith did one with pictures at http://mikesphotography.myfreeforum.org/about2345.html
but since his image hosting website went down, those pictures are now gone.

What I am doing is replacing the pictures piecemeal, so those pictures are back, I've just done them. If anyone comes across pics missing and wants them replaced let me know.

Well i managed to get a border of sorts, thanks for that. however, its just a solid border around all 4 sides and doesn't look all 3d and shadowy like yours!

Its Photoshop CS2 that I tried to do the border in. I normally use - hardly dare say - Picasa! Ok, you can stop laughing now.

No laughing here my friend, for several years, because I was skint, I did all my cropping, laboriously, and much else, in MSPaint.

Derek
found this site, look through it as it will give a great idea on borders, floating border is at the bottom of the page, can be adapted using the bevel and emboss bit in layer styles.

That's a great find Dave, excellent tutorial. I was going to PM you but might as well put it here, I was going to ask if you wanted me to take on and do a walk-through but discovered that I use PS so seldom now I can't remember where everything is. I am using PSPX almost exclusively, so as the so called resident Photoshop expert I'm a bit of a fraud now. I can certainly find stuff if anything comes up, but I just let this one slide. Not very helpful.
I know PS is the god of all image programs, but at the level I am PSPX does everything and more that I require and for anyone looking to get a package, PSPX is as cheap as chips because it's been superceded by the incredibly clunky PSP Photo X2, which I do not think was step forward at all.

Keith, cheers, was looking at doing the tutorial and thought I bet someone else has already done it, and a 30 second google search (can't remember what phrase I used) brought this one up.
PSP X to anyone who is after a package - first person (in UK) to get back to me can have mine - it's original and valid (not a copy) or you can get the one on ebay at £5 at the minute ( http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Corel-Paint...12&_trksid=p3286.c0.m14.l1318 )
You will need to PM me your address.
