Im nick and im from colchester, im 25 and live with my girlfriend and our dog Dylan,
I bought this canon 400d camera about 8 weeks ago, i used some money left to me by my nan who passed away this year, So for her ive got to learn how to use it to it full advantage and get some awasome pictures.
So if anybody has any tips or advice for a beginner then pass it my way.
Thank you and look forward to hearing from u guys

Hi Nick, congratulations on getting a 400d somehow a fitting tribute to your nan to record and enjoy the world around you in a unique way. Welcome and I certainly look forward to seeing some of your work. My only tip at this moment is start taking pictures, all else will follow.

Nick welcome, best way to learn is to go out and experiment. Don't be afraid to upload pictures for comment. Think we are all still learning - something called life long learning I think.
Great camera you've got yourself - have fun, I'm sure your nan will be proud and pleased.

Firstly Nick hello and welcome to the forum.
Thats a nice way to remember your Nan and I'm sure given time and the right advice you'll achieve your goal.
Firstly I would do as creators as said and snap away as much as possible in as many different conditions, so you can see how the results vary. Ask your girlfriend to model for some portrait shots. Even try taking some of your dog local area etc. (just remember with portrait shots eye contact is important)
Secondly put some of what you consider are your best shots on the forum so we can see and give you advice if needed.
Remember we all have to start somewhere and everyone on here is full of good advice and tips, so feel free as many questions as you like.
My first SLR was a 350D and i think the controls are very much the same as the 400D, so if you not sure of anything then give me a shout.

Welcome to the forum.
Kinda like everyone else said to be honest. The easiest way to learn is to take pics and then let other people tell you what your doing right and what you can do to improve.
We could all sit here all day telling you how to take photo's and it wouldn't make any difference at all.
So get out there, have a play, be creative.
My only piece of advice would be this,
Instead of just pressing the shutter, stop, look, then look again, an I mean really look, look at shadows, look at detail, look at texture, and most importantly of all LOOK AT LIGHT. and above all, enjoy.
