horseracing pics from the weekendHandful of pics from the weekend's point-to-point meeting. Apologies for the watermarks, but it's amazing what google can find, and what people are willing to try and print out for themselves ;)
The last one was taken at iso1250, f/2.8 and i still only managed 1/180! now that's what I mean when I say I shoot in appauling light

Nice work John,
Great set of action shoots.
Considering the relative slow shutter speed you have done a great job to maintain good sharp images on fast moving subjects.

thanks mike ;) the rest of them were taken at a much higher shutter speed, but the light really fell away (like it always does) towards the end of the day

Great shooting Jon, and thanks for the timely reminder about picture theft. I am in the process of redoing my stereo site and will be watermarking everything.

Just out of interest where did you get your watermark from?

I know for a fact that people print my pics off the site - I've had people admit it to my face without an ounce of guilt! If they want to print out a small 72dpi image that is in the public domain I can't stop them, but it's not like i'm charging pro prices
The images here were actually done specially for a racing site and the watermarks were done ad-hoc to fit, I'll usually publish images at 640x426
for my gallery on http://www.point2pointing.co.uk i have two transparent .png files to fit portrait and landscape shots which my gallery applies automatically as i add images.
i made the files just using layers in photoshop. I got an image, set up a layer for a giant (C) and another one for the text, set an appropriate amount of opacity for each layer, deleted the image then just saved the file as a png whilst maintaining transparency.
both versions of menalto gallery support watermarking

And on the back of this post i have a little celebration to announce.
The 3rd pic in the original post was published in the Horse & Hound's report of this meeting! I guess that means I'm now published

Well done Jon,
i like the reflection in the eye is caught... in the last one you've done the same as i've done...(assume the light has dropped off the most at this point) but i get a centre part of the image bang on, the rest has motion blur.
Can you confirm this on the original for me...i just want to see if you've done the same as me.
btw...well done for getting published!

yeah the last one is all motion blur, no pp - iso1250, 30mph horse and only 1/180!
didn't even have vr on at the time :-o
