Oh baby, it's cold outsideActually, we had the nicest day in a month today with a little hazy sun, not too much wind and the warmest day in weeks at about -5C. So I had no excuse. It was time to get the camera out for some exercise. I needed some too
Got cold and wet taking this - the snow was up around my knees and the wind was nipping at my fingers. Brrr...

Well done John, that could not have been an easy subject to get the exposure right, but you did. Absolutely marvelous shot!

I have more than a few blue pictures
Fortunately I remembered that recently I read that for snow you should increase the exposure by about 2 stops. This image was done at about +1.5 EV.
For the life of me I can't remember where I read that, but it was very recent. The problem these days as I try to learn is that I buy every book and mag I can get my hands on, not to mention surfing lots of websites. I'm sitting here now with literally 20 mags, 3 books and who knows how many links to websites

Photographing snow, or so I've heard, and I hope you can hear the grinding of teeth here, is never easy, but this is a far cry from a pastoral scene. The contrasts are so extreme that even a brief pause for thought and one gets seriously impressed. It was obviously taken in full sunlight and that you managed to get it impressed the hell out of me.

You heard it here first folks, photography ruins you for any normal form of life.

The other trick with snow is using the blue sky (that is if you have a blue sky) above the shot to obtain a manual exposure on the sky, then recompose the shot using the same settings.
Oh, nearly forgot, cracking shot, spot on

Now that's a good tip - thanks!
During winter, we don't get many days with blue skies unfortunately What we have is months on end of dismal gray sky which makes everything gray
So I have to take advantage of days like yesterday. They are precious!
And thanks for the compliment!

Hat off to you mate - snow is probably the hardest medium to work with - it's a tough one to get right.
Good job!

Thanks! This was my first real attempt at taking a photo in bright sunlight with snow, so I took a number of shots before I got it right.
I've learned some things from the experience though, so next time I should have a fighting chance of getting it right the first time.
Now if we would only get a little sun more than once in a while
