Reflections

I saw this idea somewhere and thought I would have a go myself as I have quite a few model cars.

All comments welcome.

Blue

I think they're great. Smile
The third is the most effective, I feel.  #2 would have benefitted a lot from cleaner glass under the car, and it might be me but it seems out of focus.  In #1, the texture of the background is slightly distracting, and in 1 and 3, there is a line of some sort on the right side behind the cars that is distracting.
You've really hit it with the third, though.  I think it's the lighting.  The darker background really does the trick. Smile

I agree with Blue I think the third one is the best. I really like the lighting and colour of the car works so well against the dark background. A minor thing (its just me really) is that I think they are a bit too close cropped and I would have liked to see a tiny bit more space at the top and bottom.   Smile

Thanks for the comments. I did crop them a bit too closely as I was trying to miss out the creases in the cardboard background. (Must get some new cardboard) I have done another one which I think looks a bit better.

Here's another one I took with a point and shoot. I am puzzled as to why the model is in focus but the reflection is blurred. I was just using a torch for the lighting on the front of the car.

try tonemapping one - reflections go nuts :D

I hate to admit this but I have no idea what tonemapping is.  Smile

Very nice - I think this last one is the best (composition, light - not focus). I agree about the darker background. Although the first one of the 350Z is good too. I think the key is ensuring the near side of the car is well lit (unlike the AC Cobra) and the background is not overlit. Another reason I like the last one best is that the interior is well lit too.

The most likely cause is using a standard mirror which has the reflective surface on the back of the glass. You end up with a double reflection because there is a lesser reflection off the glass surface as well. There are special mirrors, used in optics like cameras and telescopes, called first surface mirrors. With these, the front surface of the glass is mirrored so you don't get the double reflection.

You can see the double reflection in the number 12 on the last photo.

Tone mapping is a way of taking a high contrast image and reducing the contrast. What is Tone Mapping?

In this case, Jon is talking about tone mapping for HDR. This topic is a good explanation of why tone mapping is used to reduce contrast in a HDR image: Introduction to HDR photography

It's not clear to me if you're using a mirror or clear glass. If you're using a mirror - with the black background, you might be able to reduce the double reflection, yet still get good results, by using clear glass instead of a mirror. But if you're already using clear glass, then you're getting reflections off both the front and rear surfaces, which will be difficult to overcome Sad

Using a very oblique angle (nearly parallel to the glass) when shooting may reduce the effect.

Thank you very much for all that information Evo. It looks a little daunting but I will read through it and see if I can make sense of it.

Yes, I was using clear glass with black card underneath.

Many thanks,

Derek
