Someone had a bad day...In life there are winners and losers - I hope never to lose like this
This was a big spider! Its body is about half the size of a golfball I'd guess - made it easy to spot. If you think I should have gotten closer with my 35mm macro, you're crazy Shot with my 150mm + 1.4x teleconverter from a safe distance.
When I first spotted it (did not have my camera with me), the wasp was still alive and visible. A few minutes later - all wrapped up in a nice neat package.

Cracking shot John - any idea of the sort of spider it is? - not one to pick up I expect.

That's one heck of a spider - nicely photographed. I like your choice of frame.

Thanks Dave. It's an Argiope aurantia (black and yellow garden spider). Apparently harmless to people. The female is much larger than the male. I guess I've only seen the males before this. She was big enough to spot from many feet away!

Many thanks!
I've had a couple of comments on this framing, and I'm starting to use it often. So I've written a photoshop action to do it for me. The one downside of an action is that it doesn't do a good job of changing options when the image size changes. So I will make two for the common sizes I post to the web. Now it just takes one click and I'm done!

Wonderful shot John. I am so spider phobic it took me a while to spend some time with this shot, but it is an incredible capture, well done.

Thanks for the kind comments Keith.
Spiders are high on my list of phobias also - I squash first and ask questions later. As I learn more about them, I try to be more tolerant as long as they aren't poisonous and not inside my house - still a zero tolerance policy there! Using a telephoto on this shot kept us at a respectful distance!
