Sorry Keith!

Finished work, grabbed my tea and nipped off to the River. 10 Banded Demoiselle on view, though still a little flighty! Get much easier to shoot as the season progresses.

Second that, all I can say is your one very patient and steady (if these are handheld) man.

Awesome Carl, just absolutely bloody awesome mate!

Nice images Carl. What lens are you using? Are these hand held or tripod?
carlj

I currently run 2 lenses for macro, the Sigma 105mm and the underrated Tamron 70-300mm 1:2. Because of the flighty nature of these fellows, it has to be the Tamron to get sufficient distance to make the Demoiselle comfortable - and even then, the females are difficult.

All handheld as I have to react almost instantly!

Thanks for comments and have corrected second shot - no-one noted the deliberate mistake Laughing

I was out playing with my Tamron 70-300 1:2 at the weekend and it's an awesome bit of kit. Although I didn't get anything worth mentioning, it is force to be reckoned with for macro work.

The general concensus is that the Sigma 70-300m is the better lens, but for macro work, it's a dog. The Tamron focusses down to 1m, which is just about a perfect working condition for insects. At the extremes of the day, when everything is ready to rest, the Sigma can be used with care!

Was that the first 2 pictures were the same?

Gold star for young Mike there! Smile

I have the sigma 70-300, why is it a dog, the focus distance is 95cm, which is the same as the tamron!??
carlj

A friend of mine had one with his pentax, and couldn't get a sharp image - couldn't say it was down to technique, but he sold it on, got the tamron, and advised me to go down that road. Looking at a couple of his shots, I could see the difference straight away. To counter the argument, put in an area of high contrast (water can be the worst) and the CA is a mare on the Tamron.
Simonzphotoz

do you know which one he had, the gold ring sigma was know to be sh1t but the red ring one has really good reviews, this was taken with it.

carlj

Believe it was the gold ring version Simon.

Another reason I got my Tamron at the time, was the £50 I saved on the Sigma too! Ironically, just as Tamron released the DI version Smile
