Statue

I mentioned on the site somewhere a couple of days ago that I was doing some pictures with a friend for her college work, it was about putting together album art and getting used to being photographed. We took the pictures in a graveyard and although I am not free to put any of her pictures up here, this is something I put together from a statue and a picture of her guitar. A very obliging statue too, may I say. Getting the shadows right was pure luck. I wish I could say I thought of all that in advance, but, well, it worked out.

Very nice - you are the master at ps.

I'm especially admiring the shadows cast by the guitar strings. The light source is so very close in position to that on the statue. That's a detail often overlooked when doing things like this.

I'm wondering two things? How this would look if the guitar was coloured to look like the stone of the statue. And, if there is more of the statue at the bottom in the original shot (maybe not), how it might look without cropping the bottom of the guitar?

Lovely work Keith!

The shadows were really the purest luck, but I love the alabaster guitar idea. I'll give it a go. The angle to get the statue meant what you see is just clear of roof lines and the guitar was rested on grass so the bottom is messy. Forethought would have been great, but...

Thanks for your comment John, I'll get on and see if I can't get that alabaster look.

Understood completely - we work with what opportunity hath presented us Very Happy

We do indeed. This is probably about as close as I think I can get it, I've added a stone texture and smoothed it somewhat. What do you think?

Evolution104

Wonderful!! Your ps skills are amazing!

I love it - well done.

But now I'm going to test you Very Happy
Not meant as critique, but something, if it can be done, that will take this to another level.

1) The picguard appears to be true black. If it was stone, I'd expect it to absorb some light, making it less black. Maybe similar to the darker shadows on the statue's right arm (left side of image)? And perhaps a little texture on that as well, but not too much here either.

2) The bridge and white string mounts (??not sure what to call that part on the - ?tailpiece?) seem to be too white. I think they should be coloured as well to look like stone. The same for the string tuning keys on the head stock.

Well - you asked for my opinion Laughing
You've done a superb job and it's beautiful as it is. But I suspect you enjoy a challenge!

Hmm, well spotted that man. I wondered why it didn't look quite right. Funny how good another pair of eyes is. Hold that thought...

I'm enjoying this thread - is there no limits - he'll be asking for the simon templar halo next - LOL

Wonderful shadows on that statue - not tyoo sure the first one looks right, and the alteration to stone is working.

It's an interesting, and difficult exercise and I am not at all sure about my progress to take it to the next level.

As album art, which is it's purpose, I think the real guitar against the statue is what my friend would want or the second level picture above. Rendering the whole picture into statuary probably defeats the purpose as the point of album art is promotion rather than blending in. She may like it because it would have a certain ironic value, but the challenge for me is whether I can do it at all. Glad your enjoying it Dave. Very Happy

I think this is about as far as I can go with it unless you can spot something I can't see through familiarity.

Only just spotted this, love the stone guitar, lovely idea and it really works.
My only input would be this.
Would the picguard and string mounts work in brass, I liked it when they were separate from the actual guitar but like Evolution said, didn't look right black and white respectively, and the wonderful golden of brass might add something to the picture.
I do like challenging you Unc!! Razz

Thanks Simon, it was a great idea (doffs hat to John).

I had a quick look at doing the brass thing, it didn't work for me. There's also a point with any picture where you just need to stop, and I've reached it on this one. It was fun though.

What a great job you did on that Keith! Certainly beyond anything I have the capacity to do.

I agree that for the image's intent as album art that the guitar should be left alone.

But divorcing myself from the context and simply looking at the image alone, I like the last one which appears all stone. I can picture that in the gardens of some famous guitar virtuoso like Romero or the late Rodrigo.

I'm glad you enjoyed the challenge. And I very much enjoyed watching you transform the image. Very nice.
