Cheddar Caves in stereo.
Still life and macro stereo pictures can be done with one camera using a slide, but for most landscape and all figure or action work two cameras are needed. For normal stereo pictures the cameras need to be roughly the same distance apart as our eyes, 6.5cm, and to view them cross eyed the picture that the left eye (left camera) would normally see is put on the right and the right picture on the left. Both cameras must be parallel or you get weird perspectives.
There are three types of stereo photography, macro, where the cameras are closer then eye width, normal - eye width, and hyper stereo - greater than eye width.
This is the rig I use for normal and hyper work. Two Nikon Coolpix 5400's on a Manfrotto support arm. Ignore the head on the right.
This is my macro rig using a macro slide and my dear old D70.
The next three pairs are samples of macro work with the camera moved 2.5cm.
And a couple of hyper stereo pairs of Stonehenge.
